Poltair Hospital closes ward due to staff shortages

Poltair Hospital, near Penzance, has 10 in-patient beds and provides outpatient clinics. The ward at the hospital will be closed until 12 March.

A spokeswoman said the decision to close was taken in the interests of "patient safety and staff care".

Staff sickness had exacerbated the situation, a spokeswoman said.

Peninsula Community Health took over the running of Cornwall's 14 community hospitals on 1 October.

Sue Shillabeer said "the temporary closure" would enable the hospital to reach a complete resolution to the staffing problems experienced at the hospital over recent months.

"It's really a combination of things hitting us all at once," she said.

Ms Shillabeer said: "By Monday 12 March newly appointed nurses will have worked out their notice period with current employers and been inducted to Peninsula Community Health ready to receive patients onto the ward at Poltair."

The remainder of the hospital continues to operate as normal with nine clinics open to out-patients.
