Callington home residents 'deprived of food'

Residents at a Cornish nursing home were deprived of food, drink and medical treatment, the health watchdog has said.

The Care Quality Commission report said the St Theresa's Care Centre in Callington failed in its duty of care.

Inspectors made an unannounced visit to St Theresa's about a month ago and found 10 "major concerns" in the way people were being looked after.

No-one from the home has yet been available to comment on the findings.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said it had immediately taken action to ensure the residents were not in danger.

The report said inspectors found that only three out of 19 people monitored had received a bath in the past month.

Staff 'kind'

Residents told the CQC that staff at the home were kind but there were not enough of them.

They said that when residents rang their bells for assistance staff took a long time to answer or did not come at all.

The staff told the inspection team that residents did not get the care they needed because there were not enough of them to do everything.

The Care Quality Commission report concluded not all the residents at St Theresa's got the care they needed, not all had adequate food and drink.

The CQC also said staff did not get the training necessary to protect residents from abuse, and medicines were not safely managed.
